The Senior Awards Ceremony will be held at Edgewood High School in the Gymnasium tonight, May 14th at 6PM for those graduating seniors and their families who received an invitation. We look forward to seeing you there.

After more than 30 years as both an educator and parent, I have seen some students experience success at levels that were more than any of us could have hoped or imagined!! I have watched as Edgewood students have gone on to become successful doctors, lawyers, teachers, and even Olympians. I have also seen students who were the brightest and most promising struggle personally and professionally. What truly makes the difference? While many factors relate to success and struggle, one thing stands out….grit. What is grit? Grit is defined as courage and resolve, strength of character. According to an article in Forbes Magazine, Psychologist Angela Duckworth says the secret to outstanding achievement isn’t talent. Instead, it’s a special blend of persistence and passion that she calls “grit.” The good news is that while IQ is relatively fixed, grit is something that everyone can develop. Some kids are naturally more “gritty” than others, but there are lots of things that you can do to help your child develop the “stick-to-itiveness” that will help them succeed in whatever they do. Below are some examples from “The Power of Defeat: How to Raise a Kid With Grit” that will guide you as you consider the importance of grit.
Put a challenge in front of them.
Give your child the opportunity to pursue at least one difficult thing. It has to be something that requires discipline to practice. The actual activity doesn’t matter as much as the effort.
Promote perseverance.
Don’t quit on a bad day. Giving up the second things get frustrating means you might
miss out on something great.
Be a nudge.
Let your kids know that you expect them to do their best and create a structure that will help them do it. Nudging means scheduling and insisting on practice times.
Let them fail–and model resilience.
Being able to pick yourself up from low moments is probably the most important skill a child can learn. If they see an adult can mess up and come back and solve a problem, that’s an important example they can use.
